If you’re preparing for young horse classes, making sure your horse’s boots comply with the regulations is essential. While many boots may look similar, there are a few important details that determine whether they are approved for competition use.
Today, we’re breaking down the key requirements for young horse class boots and highlighting approved options available at Kentaur Australia.
Hind Boot Rules for Young Horse Classes
Young horse class rules are designed to ensure fairness and horse welfare, particularly regarding hind boot construction and fit.
Here are the main requirements to look out for:
Boot Height & Fastener Width
The inside of the hind boot must be at least 16 centimetres tall, while the fastener must be a minimum of 5 centimetres wide.
Flat Interior Design
The inside of the boot must be completely flat. This means there cannot be pressure points, raised sections, or shaping designed to influence movement.
Pastern Protection Rules
Additional protection for the pastern is permitted, however it must be made from a soft, pliable neoprene material.
Importantly, this protective element can only sit on the inside of the fetlock. It cannot wrap around the entire leg like some traditional hind boots.
Velcro Fastenings Only
All fastenings on young horse approved hind boots must be made using Velcro closures only.
Hooks, buckles, clips, and billet-style fasteners are not permitted in young horse classes.
Sheepskin Linings
Sheepskin linings are allowed under the current regulations, making them a great option for horses needing additional comfort and protection.
What Is Not Approved?
Boots featuring billet straps, buckles, clips, or non-compliant fastening systems are not approved for young horse classes, even if the rest of the boot meets the sizing requirements.
Always check your gear and the FEI guidelines before competition day to avoid unnecessary stress at gear check.
Front Boot Rules
For front boots, there are currently no specific dimensional restrictions for young horse classes. However, they must still comply with standard FEI Jumping rules.
As rules can change, it’s always important to double-check the latest FEI guidelines before competition.
